Main research directions of the Department 

Research Section of Chemical Thermodynamics and Kinetics consists of three laboratories:

  • Laboratory of Chemical Thermodynamics,
  • Laboratory of Chemical Kinetics,
  • Laboratory of Thermodynamic and Kinetic studies of Nanostructured Materials.

Research and teaching work of the Department and the laboratories combines tasks of thermodynamics and kinetic studies. Main research directions of the Department include the following sections:

  1. General problems of thermodynamics. Experimental and theoretical investigation of heterogeneous equilibria inmulticomponent systems including systems with chemical reactions. Vapour-liquid systems, liquid-liquid systems,vapour-liquid-liquid systems. Critical state. Thermodynamics of coupled processes. Critical phenomena in systems with chemical reactions. Development of the theory of thermodynamic stability and its application for investigation of the processes in heterogeneous systems of different physico-chemical nature. Development of the theory of thermodynamic of irreversible processes.
  2. Thermodynamics and kinetics of the processes in high-temperature oxide systems. Thermochemicalinvestigations, X-ray phase analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis. Kinetics of solid state reactions. Phaseequilibria and phase diagrams of solid state oxide systems. Synthesis and investigation of functional properties ofnanostructured systems. Layered structures (Ruddlesden-Popper phases, Aurivillius phases, Dion-Jacobson phases): directedsynthesis and mutual transformations. Catalytic properties of layered oxides, catalytic photochemical reactions. Development of new catalysts for photo-induced catalytic processes.
  3. Thermodynamics and kinetics of membrane processes, experimental and theoreticalinvestigation ofpervaporation (evaporation through the membrane). Other membrane processes: vapour separation and gas separation, ultrafiltration. Hybrid and coupled processesincluding stages of membrane separation. Synthesis andphysico-chemical properties of new membrane materials, i. a. materials on the basis of polymer composites andnanocomposites.Analysis and modeling of transmembrane mass-transfer on the basis of non-equilibrium thermodynamics.
  4. Methods of production and physico-chemical properties of nanocompositematerials. Carbon nanostructures:production, separation, purification, phase diagrams of systems with carbon nanoclusters (fullerenes, nanotubes,astralenes). Polymer nanocomposites modified with carbon nanoclusters. Dependence of thermodynamic, physical and mechanical properties of composite materials on content and topology of nanomodifier.
  5. Kinetics of liquid-phase reactions in non-ideal concentrated liquid media. Development of thermodynamic and kinetic approach in chemical kinetics on the basis of non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

Teaching activities of the Department in 2013-2014

Department of Chemical Thermodynamics and Kinetics teaches highly qualified personnel – bachelors, masters, specialists, candidates, and doctors for various scientific and practical activities. Main education areas reflect the essence of thermodynamics and kinetics as the two sides of the doctrine of the chemical process. Fundamental and practical problems are solved on the basis of the thermodynamic-and-kinetic approach include a wide range of processes and objects, which allows a graduate who studied at the Department to find the use of the acquired knowledge to work in various fields.

In 2014 the Department participated in the overall training at St.Petersburg State University of:

  • Graduates in specialty 020101 – Chemistry;
  • Bachelors and Masters in directions 020100 – Chemistry and 020700 – Geology;
  • Bachelors in direction 020300 – Chemistry, Physics, and Mechanics of Materials
  • Main courses delivered by lecturers of the Department:
  • Statistical Thermodynamics (lectures and seminars) – second year (specialists);
  • Thermodynamics (lectures and seminars) – second year (bachelors);
  • Chemical kinetics (lectures, seminars, and workshops) – third year (specialists);
  • Kinetics and Catalysis (lectures, seminars, and workshops) – third year (bachelors, both directions);
  • Electronic Scientific Information Resources (lectures) – second and third year (bachelors, both directions);
  • Non-equilibrium thermodynamics (lectures) – third year (bachelors);
  • Chemical kinetics (lectures, seminars) – fourth year, evening courses (specialists).

Special courses of the Department include various sections of chemical thermodynamics and kinetics, fundamental chemical materials science, and others, in particular, the courses: "Thermodynamics of Heterogeneous Systems", “Applied Chemical Thermodynamics”, “Phase Transformations in Glasses”, “Kinetics of Chemical Reactions in Solutions”, “Thermodynamics of Nonelectrolyte Solutions”. In addition, some special courses are for the students majoring in the Department of Physical Chemistry and for the Department of Electrochemistry (Faculty of Chemistry), Department of Crystallography (Faculty of Geology). Lecturers of the Department also deliver elective courses of lectures (“Theory of Chemical Affinity”, “Kinetics of Catalytic Reactions”, “Fundamentals of the Theory of Critical States”, “Solid-phase reactions”) for students of the Faculty of Chemistry. Many general and special courses are prepared in the form of multimedia presentations. Total actual teaching load of the Department amounted to more than 5,000 hours of study.

This collaboration includes both joint research, for example, in the field of polymer materials with the Institute of Macromolecular Compounds, RAS; carbon nanostructures and modifiers with SEC Applied Nanotechnologies; research in the field of solid-phase systems in conjunction with the University of Groningen (Netherlands); research in the field of membrane technology with the Institute of Macromolecular Compounds of the Czech Academy of Sciences; the study of thermodynamic properties of polymer and oxide materials at the University of Malmo (Sweden).

Together with the “Technology Center of the XXI century” and the Department of Analytical Chemistry (St.Petersburg State University) the Research and Education Center “Sorption and Membrane Technologies” was organized in 2010 (Director ‒Prof. A.M.Toikka).
