The department was established in 2007 on the basis of the laboratory of the chemistry of semiconductors of the chemical faculty and Laser research institute of the Teaching and Scientific Center of SPbSU.

The department initiated organization of the Resource Center for optical and laser materials research (http://laser.spbu.ru/).

Teaching activity

Bachelor’s degree

Direction «Chemistry»

For students studying chemistry in the framework of the direction Chemistry the department offers to study laser chemistry and to do the bachelor thesis research. To do this one should choose the block of disciplines «Laser chemistry» in the Inorganic or Physical chemistry profiles of this direction. The list of courses includes:

  • Laser Experimental Technique
  • Interaction of Laser Radiation with Matter
  • Laser-induced Chemical Processes
  • Modern Laser Systems in Chemical Research
  • Optical Properties of Crystalline and Glassy Semiconductors
Direction «Chemistry, Physics and Mechanics of Materials»

Students studying chemistry in the framework of the direction Chemistry, Physics and Mechanics of Materials are invited to do the bachelor thesis research at the department.

Master’s degree

For students interested in taking the master’s degree the department offers to study laser chemistry or laser material science.

Laser Chemistry

To study the laser chemistry one should enter the direction Chemistry. The trajectory (the block of the disciplines) «Laser chemistry» is represented in three profiles of this direction: Inorganic chemistry, Physical chemistry and Solid state chemistry. Thus, one should choose between these profiles and then choose the block of the disciplines “Laser chemistry”.  The list of courses includes:

  • Principles of Laser Chemistry
  • Design and principles of modern laser systems
  • Laser spectroscopy in chemistry
  • Photostructural Changes in Nanostructured Materials
  • Coherent Laser Chemistry
  • Laser Synthesis and Modification of New Materials
  • Femtosecond Laser Systems and Two-Photon Chemical Processes
  • Laser ablation
  • Matter in strong laser fields

Laser Material Science

To study the laser material science one should enter the direction Chemistry, Physics and Mechanics of Materials and choose Laser material science profile. The list of courses includes:

  • Design and principles of modern laser systems
  • Interaction of laser radiation with matter
  • Fundamentals of laser material science
  • Laser methods in the study of matter properties
  • Laser synthesis and modification of new materials
  • Laser ablation
  • Matter in a strong laser fields
  • Physico-chemical fundamentals of the development of functional materials for optics
  • Photostructural Changes in Nanostructured Materials
  • Optical Properties of Crystalline and Glassy Semiconductors
  • Photonic materials

 Scientific activity

  • Laser and optical methods in study of materials and chemical processes
  • Laser methods of chemical synthesis and modification of materials
  • Development of new materials for laser and optical technologies
