- Development of production techniques of novel generation composite materials on the base of ceramic and metallic arrays nanostructured by carbide nanowires.
- Development of synthesis techniques of nanodispersed silica arrays for immobilization of bioactive agents, in particular for drug target delivery.
- Development of novel approaches to control of photovoltaic structures properties for Solar power engineering.
- Development of novel technologies of structures production for main memory and logics elements.
- Developing of automated technologic plants for production of multilayer dielectric and semiconductor films by molecular layering technique =atomic layer deposition (ALD).
The department was founded by Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Professor Valentin Borisovich Aleskovskii in 1978. A history of the department is deeply rooted in 50-60-es of 20th Century. At that time in the University the classical studies in the condensed state chemistry have been fulfilled under leadership of outstanding Russian scientists R. L. Müller, A.N.Murin, S.M.Ariya et al.
Professor V.B.Aleskovskii, associate professor V.M.Smirnov, assistant professor V.P. Tolstoy, assistant professor V.N.Postnov, and Ph.D. in physics V.E.Drozd were the first lecturers. Initially the department was located in the old building of Research Institute of Physics in the yard of the University Main Building. In 1983 the department was moved to the new building of the chemical faculty in Peterhof.
Corresponding member of Russian Academy of Sciences (former of the USSR Academy of Sciences) V.B.Aleskovskii was a head of the department from the first days of its existing. Since 1989 Honoured Science Worker Dr.Sci. in chemistry Professor I.V.Murin is the head of the Solid State Chemistry Department.
The main point in the academic activity is to train the modern chemists, research workers in the field of solid state chemistry and materials science. At present time three academic levels are available for students:
- specialist’s degree takes five academic years to complete,
- bachelor’s degree takes four years,
- master’s degree takes two years (a bachelor degree is a prerequisite).
The department trains post-graduate students (candidate of sciences degree takes 3 years).
Development of a physico-chemical base for inorganic materials science is one of the main directions of the research activity. Other directions are a chemical design and a study of crystalline, amorphous and nanostructured materials for various purposes.
Academic activity
Student can choose one from two training directions: “Chemistry” or “Chemistry, physics, and mechanics of materials”. Lecturers give about 50 courses. Among them are “Introduction to the materials science”, ”Nanotechnology of molecular layering”, Nanomaterials for medicine”, “Photoelectrochemistry and heterogeneous photocatalysis”, “Nanoparticles: synthesis and properties”, “Applied solid state ionics”, “Practicum in the information visualization for materials science”, “Smart materials”. Topics of lectures are incessantly renewed. For last 3 years 23 novel lecture courses were proposed. Now days all courses are given in Russian. However all lecturers speak English sufficiently.
